We demand New York Times to take down the article , "How Sotnikova Beat Kim, Move By Move," and officially make corrections on the article on these grounds;
1. Composite Images
This is not a joke. This is beyond photoshopping. Photoshopping is what you do to polish images, not fabricate the truth. The problem with the images in the article is that the oh-so-bluntly-fraudulant images were MAINLY, and shamelessly, used to support Mr.Leib's analysis, which is supposed to be based on HIS EXPERTISE in figure skating as a technical specialist. It is very easy to manipulate people with pictures - anyone can give you a certain image and make you think a certain way. Obviously, if you see an image of a tall person, you will think the person is tall - regardless of the fact that the person is actually small but his height was vertically stretched to look tall by photoshop. But without having seen the real person, we will never know the truth. As one of the most renowned newspaper, it is surprising that New York Times would resort to this low trick to support their angle that the gold medalist was technically better. If NYT was using the images to prove this point, I expect NYT to have the least decency to actual images, with no tweaks. I'm even more disappointed with Mr. Leib who based his analysis on these images - he has the expertise in figure skating so his analysis should be derived from his knowledge on how the scoring works - and what qualities, besides the base scores of the planned elements in a program, award the skaters with more points - according to International Skating Union Guidelines on GoE (Grade of Execution) And, Mr Leib, fake images don't tell you those qualities...
2. Mr. Leib's Analysis - Fact vs Distorted information
1) 2A-3T vs 3S-2T
Fact: 3S-2T base value lower, 2A-3T second half bonus & higher GoE
Distored Information:
*Good jump height, distance, flow (from images) vs simple entry, low speed (from images) - yielded major difference
- First of all, 2A-3T & 3S-2T different kind of jumps - not suitable for quality comparison.
ie) entry into 2A and 3S different. faulty logic comapring entry into 3S vs 2A
Kim 3S-2T rocker turn transition +proper 3-turn entry vs Gold medalist 3S 3-turn entry - Kim simple entry?
Yuna 2A-2T-2Lo (ina bauer) vs 2A-3T (no specific entry) - 2A-3T high GoE??
- jump images (photoshopped, scale difference to make 2A-3T higher & bigger)
- No explanation on how 2A-3T got high GoE vs 3S-2T lower GoE - based on ISU guideline

- "Move by Move"? 2A-3T & 3S-2T were't the only jumping elements - What about other jumping elements? why no analysis? Yuna had higher score in 3Lz-3T and 3Lz vs 3Lo
2) Step Sequence (Footwork)
Fact: Kim level 3 vs Gold medalist level 4 - Kim base value lower
Distorted Information:
In this case, there is no analysis on how the gold medalist fulfilled the requirements for level 4 (Or why kim got level 3)

As a technical specialist, Mr. Leib should well know exactly which turns & steps were included in their step sequence - and if they satisfy level 3 or 4.
3) Spins
Fact: Layback spin Kim level 3 (no biellmann) vs level 4 gold medalist - Kim base value lower by 0.3 points
Distorted Information:
*gold medalist maintained speed and intensity, changed position with ease - scored higer
- again, there are more than one criteria for getting GoE

- good control on centering on axis with speed (one of the criteria for GoE) - images show how sotnikova had less travelling from the centre axis - but you notice they used much less number of capture frames for the gold medalist to make it look like the gold medalist travelled less.
3. Others
There are other things that this article is missing
- analysis on technical calls; step sequence level, jump wrong edge & under-rotations etc. - as technical specialist, this is Mr. Lieb's expertise to be able to analyze whether the calls were made correctly. But no mention at all about this.
- Short program; the final mark consists of both short program and free program. No mention of short program at all
- No mention of Program Component Score (PCS) - which awards skating skills, interpretation, composition, choreography, performance, movement etc.
All in all, NYT should have written about facts + Authentic expert analysis
- Fact: the gold medalist base value higher in free program
Kim had higher base value in short program
Gold medalist had higher overall GoE points
Step Sequence level 3 vs 4
PCS nearly the same (In both short program & Free Program)
- technical calls accurate?? (step sequence levels, wrong edge/under-rotation)
- GoE awarded properly?? (according to the guideline?)
- PCS?? how did the gold medalist receive high PCS? what requirements did she fulfill?
With NYT's reputation, many readers have already been manipulated by this article into thinking that the gold medalist was technically superior than the former Olympic champ and silver medalist, Yuna Kim. They gold medalist supporters refer back to this article as evidence that she was better - because "NYT is a credible source." The article is now wide spread and people are accepting the article as the truth.
As much as I was disappointed with the Sochi result, as much as I have bias of my own, I expect the least dignity and pride for delivering objective facts - journalistic intergrity - from NYT. How much longer do we have to fool ourselves by being ignorant and believing what NYT says just because NYT is a reputable source? How much longer will NYT keep up thier lies? NYT not only had misleading images and information on the article, but also defamed Yuna Kim while arguing their case against her - without any solid proof (Beside the images, it's just Mr. Lieb's words and even his " expert analysis" was based on those images).
Please sign this petition to bring back journalistic integrity so there are no more victims of reckless media reporting!!!

STATEMENT ON SOCHI SCANDAL
1. We deemed the judging during the Ladies' figure skating competition at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games a serious offense, which we consider unreasonable match-fixing by the biased judgment.
2. We demand that the IOC executive board thoroughly investigate the biased judgement and restore the Olympic spirit which has been damaged by the power of capital and political intention.
3. We urge IOC to take sanctions against the ISU corresponding to the match-fixing, including withdrawal of figure skating from the Olympic Event or withdrawal of the recognition about ISU.
4. Judges engaged in match-fixing at Sochi Olympics should be applied for the permanent ineligibility or exclusion from the Olympic Games by IOC.
5. We denounce KSU for filing a mockery of a complaint to ISU DC and suspected of dealing with ISU to bringing back the right to participate in the games of the host country with certain conditions and the vote against the abolishment of anonymous judgement.
6.The right to participate in the games of the host country for figure skating must be recovered unconditionally.
7. We demand that KOC and KSU officially make an appeal to the CAS regarding the result of the ladies' single figure skating competition at Sochi Olympics as soon as possible in accordance with the Olympic Charter, CAS Arbitration Rules of the Olympic Games and the Decision of the ISU DC on the complaint filed by KSU on April, 2014.
8. We demand that the KOC organized joint meetings with the fans and ensure the participation of the fans in appointing a lawyer, filing a complaint, and selecting the witnesses and testifiers in the preparation of appeal to CAS.

8. KOC는 CAS 항소 준비과정에서 팬들과 공동대책회의를 구성하고 변호사 선임과 제소장 작성 및 증인, 참고인 선정 등에 팬들의 참여를 보장하라.

Hello, the ISU and the DC members, I am ~~ who lives in Seoul.
I was deeply shocked and disappointed watching the ladies’ single skating events at the Sochi Olympics.
What makes us feel even more shocked and disappointed is that the ISU keeps being acquiescent on it.
Everyone knows that something that can be considered cheating and an offence against the spirit of sportsmanship happened at the ladies’ single skating events at Sochi.
It did happen. The Sochi Olympics laughed at all mankind who had put morals and conscience before their own national interests.
We were forced to see the ethics of fairplay being killed by nationalism. Do we have to see it every 4 years?
Unless this shameful scandal of the Sochi Olympics is rectified, the Olympics can not be the events which contribute to the world peace any longer. They will be degenerated as events that powerful countries throw their weights around.
The immoral figures adroitly used the contradictory regulations of the ISU as follows.
First, the anonymous judging installed by the ISU can never provide ways to evaluate the controversial cases in which an anonymous judge or anonymous judges gave a specific skater exceptionally high scores “out of the blue.
Second, no protests against evaluations by referees, judges and the technical panel of the skaters’ performances are allowed.
Thus, we urge the members of the DC and ISU to investigate this scandal thoroughly and to amend the contradictory regulations so that any further problems will not happen.
However, the wounds which we got by the sport will not be healed forever, unless the skater who was an unquestionable victim of such loopholes in the current ISU judging system is not redressed, even if the two things which were mentioned above are rectified.
We urge the ISU to take steps/actions - re-evaluation which guarantees fairness - immediately to redress the colossal injustice done to her.
We believe that it’s the one and only true way for the current ISU judging system to get back on the right path and correct its deviation.
Ottavio Cinquanta’s statements in an interview with Chicago Tribune (2/21/2014) are practically the same as acknowledging that he approved and/or assigned such individuals in a conflict of interest position regarding two competing skaters for the Sochi technical and judging panel. In fact, a majority of Sochi officials were selected against the ISU General Regulation Rule 121 and Code of Ethics Article (h) and (i), violating the “Conflict of Interest” Statues.
The aim we protest against the Sochi scandal is not to take the gold medal from Sotnikova. We hope that Kim Yuna who showed perfect performances will receive the gold medal which she deserves.
We are writing this letter because we’re afraid the ISU will sweep this scandal under the rug. Of course, we hope that Yuna Kim will also be awarded her very deserved gold medal in the end. But, at the same time, we hope to see fair judging in every individual competition so that athletes are rewarded for their years of hard work and for their excellence. We hope athletes are treated and judged equally and fairly regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, gender, race, or any other characteristic. Therefore, we strongly ask them to correct the scandalous Sochi judging and its results so that we can remain loyal to sports as well as figure skating.

2014년 3월 26일 당시 대한체육회(KOC)에서 대한빙상연맹(KSU)으로 컴플레인(complaint)에 관한 서류를 보냈기 때문에 대한빙상연맹이 세계빙상연맹(ISU)로 보내는 절차가 남아있었다. 그래서 이번 일이 조속히 해결되길 바라는 마음과 기각되었을 경우 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)로 항소 등의 행동을 위해 청원을 원하는 마음을 담아 국내 피겨 팬들은 손편지 운동을 시작하였다.
편지는 총 3가지 방향으로 이루어졌다.
첫번째. 대한빙상연맹, 김재열 회장님께 드리는 편지. 대한빙상연맹(KSU)에 직접 방문해서 직원을 통해 전달하고자 하였다. 도입부에 적혀있다시피 26일 당시 대한빙상연맹(KSU)이 세계빙상연맹(ISU)에 서류를 보내는 절차가 남아있었기 때문에 국내 피겨 팬들은 대한빙상연맹(KSU)이 충분한 내용을 정확하고 빠르게 세계빙상연맹(ISU)에 전달하길 바랬다. 또한 이로 인해 소치 여자 싱글 피겨 스케이팅 스캔들이 빠르게 해결되며, 제소를 했을 경우에 기각이 된다면 올림픽준비위원회로 정당한 스포츠 정신을 찾길 바라는 마음이었다. 두번째. 세계빙상연맹, 회장님께 드리는 편지. 대한빙상연맹(KSU)에서 보내는 컴플레인에는 세계빙상연맹(ISU)에 징계위원회를 소집하고 조사에 착수해달라는 요청이 포함되어 있다고 밝혔다. 판정이 부당하다는 것을 공식화해서 앞으로 불공정 시비가 다시 일지 않도록 개혁을 요구한다는 것이 체육회와 연맹의 입장이었다. 이에 한국 피겨 팬, 국내 피겨 팬들은 소치 스캔들 문제의 중대성을 깨닫고 기각하지 말고 징계위원회를 소집하여, 공정하고 깨끗한 올림픽을 만들어 주십사 마음을 담아 손으로 쓴 편지를 보내고자 하였다. 세번째, 국제올림픽위원회 위원장님께 드리는 편지. 세계빙상연맹(ISU)에서 각하될 경우 한국빙상연맹(KSU)과 대한 체육회(KOC)에서는 국제올림픽준비위원회(IOC)로 항소하게 된다. 한국 피겨팬들은 국제올림픽준비위원회(IOC) 위원장님께서 조사단을 꾸려 중재재판소 열기를 바라는 마음을 담고자 하는 취지였다. 편지의 분량은 반페이지에서 한페이지 정도가 적당하며 두번째와 세번째의 경우에는 한글로 작성하였을 경우 영문으로 바꿔 손편지 사진과 영문을 손편지 관련 FSU_for fairness 페이스북에 올린다. 손편지 원문 보내기는 2014년 4월 11일자로 종료되어 세계빙상연맹(ISU)와 국제올림픽준비위원회(IOC)에 보내졌으며 대한빙상연맹(KOC)에는 추후 보낼 예정이다. 현재는 자신이 쓴 손편지가 있다면 사진으로 소치 스캔들 손 편지 페이스북으로 직접 올리거나 FSU_for fairness 카페 가입 후 올리면 페이스북에 올라가게 된다.
